You know, I like to consider myself a fairly patient fellow, but last night in CoH working the Invention badges (the L25-30 ones that give +2 salvage storage each) really stretched my limits.
Working the badges from the info available in the badge description and the info online seems very straightforward. For example, "Create L25 and L30 Accuracy or To-Hit Enhancements". Seems simple right? Not so much. See, the status bar for the badge is 1/2 full. Great, right? Halfway there! Not so much. See, there is a specific combination of enhancements at specific levels required to complete the badge requirements. From what I figured out (via trial and error and a LOT of wasted influence at the consignment house) is that there is a specific split that's needed between levels and types to fulfill the badge requirements.
See, at a macro level, the requirement appears to be that you need to create 8 L25 enhancements, 8 L30 enhancements, and 1 extra (what level I haven't figured yet). Where it gets dicey is that if the badge calls out "Accuracy or To-Hit Enhancements" what it really means is that you need to create BOTH. It's not an "or" function. It's an "and" function. BIG difference.
Where this sucks is in my situation, where the progress bar is half full. Great. I'm halfway there, but what IOs have I made already? That's the 1M influence question.... Literally. That's about what I burned figuring this out and getting two of the 7 or 8 badges available that give the boost to salvage storage.
So! For the "Create L25 and L30 Accuracy or To-Hit Enhancements" badge, the split is:
- Create 4 Level 25 Accuracy IOs
- Create 4 Level 30 Accuracy IOs
- Create 4 Level 25 To Hit Buff IOs
- Create 4 Level 30 To Hit Buff IOs
- Create one extra Level (?) IO
I started creating L25 Accuracies. After my first one, creating them didn't get the bar to move at all. OK. Sell at the consignment house, shuffle salvage, buy more recipies and salvage, go back to the base in Talos Island (thank GOD they are close to one another). Craft some L30 Accuracies. OK, progress bar for the badge does not move AT ALL. What the hell? OK, back to consignment house, buy To-Hit recipes... Recipes are full. Damn. Sell recipes to make room. OK, buy To-Hit Recipies. Buy salvage. Damn, salvage is full. OK, sell salvage to make room. Buy more salvage. OK, TO THE BASE! Craft the L25 IOs. OK, great. Back to the consignment house! Buy the L30 recipes... Damn, none available. OK, I'll buy them at the base terminal. Buy more salvage. BACK TO THE BASE! Craft the L30 IOs... WHAT? Still no badge? What the hell did I miss? OK, back to the consignment house. Buy recipies and salvage for one of everything. BACK TO THE BASE! Craft 2 of the 4 in random order and PRESTO! Badge earned. (puff puff puff). OK, 1 hour spent with close to 1M influence gone... How is this "fun" again?
It's getting easier now that I know what to look for and how to approach this, but SWEET MOTHER is it a pain in the ass.
Figured I'd share before Eric and Rob started descending down into this black pit. I'm doing this for Flambeau, but it's gonna be a while before any other of my characters get this treatment, I tell ya.

The woes of invention badges

Ouch!
I think it smartly goes to show that these types of things were among Eric's fears when the consignment stores came into play. I think it also goes to show that, despite the extra slots you are trying to earn, you are just addicted to badges!
Intervention!
I think the mayor of Paragon City needs to have a giant ceremony for Mantlet to actually reward him all these badges, like Han and Luke after destroying the Death Star.
Nonetheless, I am certainly thankful that you'd done all this work first. I still am not nearly as savvy on the creations kept to creations sold ratio nor the worthy vs. worthless drops ratio to earn enough INF on my lower toons for these things you are talking about to even be options yet. I still tend to be making just the amount of INF I need to create or buy the next 2 or 3 enhancements and am then back to being broke.
So, all this reasearch will come in handy for my higher toons and ultimately for my lowbies should the time ever arise. It would be nice if the whole system was a tad more transparent.
Mantlet's a badge whore, yes. But in this case, the badge hunting is for Flambeau to support the "Supply Officer" role I want for him in the SG. His powerset and penchant for decimating large quantities of foes means he collects a ton of valuable salvage for the SG. I want to maximize that, since it's more efficient for him to farm salvage than other characters in our supergroup. He's turning into a real AoE powerhouse. Taking on spawns of 12-15 at time and chewing through them at a good rate yeilds roughly 1-3 pieces of salvage per spawn. I usually get 1-2 Rares per night (Rares average 1-3M each and are used for all the good rare recipes that our primes will be looking for). I just don't have the kind of money that Orleans has banked up, so this is my way of contributing.
All I did for that kind of money is game the market, which, of course, I swore I'd never do. But checking through the recipes just to see what recipes I could make with whatever salvage I happened to have has netted some big gains. I've also had some rather fortuitous drops. Once I realized I could get my 50 SOs at a drastic discount, I figured I could use the rest of my influence for something more extravagant. 5 mil is a lot to pay for a recipe, but not if it then sells for 10 or 20 as a finished enh. It is not, however, worth the time I spent on it. Since teams are difficult to come by at our level (except for fasrms or bridges) I could justify it as something to do while waiting. Honestly, though I just should have logged off. :)
Well, I burned about 3 high-value pieces of salvage whipping up a 4-pack of Mako's Bite enhancements for Flambeau tonight. They are very nice. +1.5% health, 20% chance of extra lethal damage, 6% global damage bonus. Yowsah! Sad thing is that the salvage alone (Deific Weapon, Soultrapped Gem, and one other) ran about 10M on the open market... That hurt. BUT! There's always more where that came from.
Cheers!
